Leaving US cloud services: Swiss and European alternatives

Published · updated

The timing is apt. Microsoft announced price changes in 2026, and the Swiss Competition Commission opened a preliminary investigation into its Swiss pricing terms. The Federal Council’s report on the CLOUD Act explains that a company subject to US law may receive an order about data under its control, including data held in a Swiss data centre. The scope, and the ways to challenge an order, depend on the case. So many organisations are asking the same question: what could replace what?

Start with three criteria: the entity you contract with and the laws that govern it; where the processing and the access happen; and how you get back out. Then examine the ownership, the subprocessors, the support access, the encryption keys, the logs, the export formats and the exit costs. One rule of honesty applies throughout: the alternatives aren’t equal, and any material gap against the US product should be stated plainly.

Communicating

Instead of Gmail or Outlook.com: Infomaniak Mail or Proton Mail (Geneva)

Two Geneva mail services, two philosophies. Infomaniak gives you professional email on your own domain with calendars and contacts; Proton gives you end-to-end encryption between Proton users. To protect an external recipient the same way, you have to use Proton’s documented password-protected or PGP workflow. Check the exact product, the metadata handling and the processing locations your contract covers.

Instead of Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace: kSuite (Infomaniak), or Nextcloud (Germany)

kSuite bundles mail, storage, collaborative documents, video conferencing and team messaging on Swiss infrastructure. Nextcloud can be self-hosted or run by a provider you select. An advanced Excel user will notice the difference, and an SME should test the macros, the formats, the collaboration, the accessibility, the integrations, the administration and the support before calling the replacement equivalent.

Storing and sharing

Instead of Google Drive or Dropbox: kDrive, Tresorit or pCloud

kDrive for everyday team use; Tresorit, a Zurich company now majority-owned by Swiss Post, for end-to-end encryption of the sensitive folders; and pCloud, headquartered in Zug, for straightforward storage. But a headquarters isn’t a data region: pCloud currently offers Luxembourg or Dallas, not Switzerland.

Selling and running the business

Instead of Salesforce or HubSpot: Odoo (Belgium)

CRM, quotations, invoicing, stock: a modular open-source suite, with integrators in French-speaking Switzerland. The applications are modular, but Odoo’s current public pricing is per user and includes all the apps in the Standard and Custom plans; it isn’t a pay-per-module offer.

Instead of QuickBooks: Bexio, Banana or Abacus (Switzerland)

Accounting is a category where the Swiss market is genuinely mature: Bexio (bought by la Mobilière), Banana (Lugano) and Abacus (St. Gallen) speak Swiss VAT, payroll and QR-bill natively. Whether the migration pays depends on the integrations, the history, the accounting practice and the total cost.

Instead of DocuSign: Skribble (Zurich)

Skribble supports several signature levels and works with certification service providers. A Swiss qualified electronic signature follows ZertES/ESigA; an EU qualified signature follows eIDAS. Switzerland and the EU don’t have a general mutual-recognition arrangement that makes one qualified signature automatically valid in both systems. Select the level and the service to match the contract, the formal requirement and the jurisdiction.

Measuring

Instead of Google Analytics: self-hosted Matomo, or Plausible (Estonia)

Matomo is free software that can run on your own Swiss hosting. A careful, cookie-free deployment may reduce what you have to ask consent for, but it doesn’t automatically remove every notice, consent or banner duty in every jurisdiction. Plausible, an Estonian company, offers the light version hosted in the EU. This site uses Matomo, self-hosted in Geneva: the visits feed no advertising network.

AI

Instead of ChatGPT: Le Chat (Mistral, Paris), Apertus (EPFL and ETH Zurich), or self-hosting

In my view, Mistral is among the most complete European consumer alternatives. Apertus, the Swiss open model published in 2025, deploys at Swisscom or on your own machines. For internal documents, self-hosting is realistic; for the raw capability of the very latest models, the US players keep an advantage. A frontier model served from a Zurich cloud region over a private network may be a defensible compromise. But it’s still operated by a US company: a Swiss data location doesn’t remove the provider’s jurisdiction, its administrative access or its subprocessors.

Infrastructure

Instead of Azure or Google Cloud: Infomaniak, Exoscale, OVHcloud, Scaleway

For web hosting, virtual machines and object storage, the Swiss providers (Infomaniak in Geneva, Exoscale in several Swiss regions) and the European ones (OVHcloud and Scaleway) can cover many routine SME or municipal needs. The hyperscalers keep deeper catalogues and worldwide integrations, plus managed services that may matter in a particular project.

Instead of LastPass or 1Password: Proton Pass (Geneva), KeePass, or Passbolt (Luxembourg)

A password manager holds the keys to the other services, which puts it at the top of the list. The selection has to cover the recovery, the sharing, the passkeys, the logs, the administration and the export as well as the hosting. Passbolt is designed for teams.

Migrating without pain

Don’t replace everything, and above all don’t replace everything at once. The right method follows the deadlines: a contract that renews, a price increase, a new requirement. At each deadline, one tool, a complete export of the data, an overlap period, then the cancellation. And for every new tool, the exit question comes before the signature: how do I get my data back?

For each migration, write down the entity you contract with, the processing regions, the subprocessors, the support access, the keys, the tested export, the identity integration, the functional gaps, the training effort, the total cost and the fallback. A headquarters flag can’t replace that record.

The date these offers were checked

I took the products and their claims on 14 August 2026. Offers, prices, ownership, regions and subprocessors change. Check the contract and test the export before any decision. This list identifies candidates; it doesn’t promise automatic functional or legal equivalence.
