Engineering project
Systems and storage engineering
Work on the technical layers connecting servers and applications to enterprise storage systems.
The project
Systems-engineering experience at a global storage-solutions vendor. The technical domain covers NAS/SAN environments and FC and iSCSI storage-access protocols.
Engineering approach
Application behaviour also depends on the path between the host and its data. The functional view distinguishes file access from block access and places the protocols in that relationship, without reproducing a particular installation.
Work delivered
Systems-engineering work on file and block storage access, connecting servers, storage networks and application data.
My contribution
- Systems engineering in enterprise storage environments
- Work on the interfaces between systems and storage using FC, iSCSI and NAS/SAN
Functional overview
The architecture distinguishes applications, hosts and storage access. File protocols connect to NAS shares. Fibre Channel and iSCSI present block volumes to servers through the SAN.
Components and flows
- Applications running on compute hosts
- File access to NAS storage
- Block access over FC or iSCSI to SAN storage
